Following up on this...

I would think that had Slackware adopted Ports as its "packaging
mechanism," it could have avoided the 'ghettoization' where the public
view seems to be that they are antisocial angry "3l33t sysadmins" who
want everyone to compile and install everything by hand.

By using Ports, just about everything would, indeed, be compiled
directly from source, but without the mandate that users have to
hand-hold the whole process, and without the problem that each system
has a differently-installed version of similar source code.

Slackware + Ports could have kept Slackware from disappearing largely
into "curiosity" status, and would have allowed it to evolve naturally
into what Gentoo is _trying_ to become...
