Hi,
I have successfully switched to Mandrake 9.2 from Red Hat 9 in order
to get GUIs that actually let you change things. I am fairly new to
Linux and not much of a software hacker (hate command lines, not
because they're too technical but because they're too inconvenient),
but do consider myself a hardware hacker, as I overclock, etc. I
have a few issues with Mandrake. First, I cannot print at all. This
was also the case with Red Hat. I have a Lexmark Z705 printer, which
there is no driver for. If I could get my printer working just for
black text, I would be happy, but when I use the raw printer driver,
it sends the test page to the printer, displays no error message, and
absolutely nothing happens. I have the printer on /dev/usb/lp0, which
does exist.
Also, when I start Linux, as soon as KDE starts, I hear some weird
music that never stops and ties up my sound card. I am running a VIA
82xx card with ALSA drivers. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Other than that, Mandrake is great and although Red Hat is certainly a
good distro for a different type of user, I would strongly recommend
Mandrake for any newbie.
Thanks
