Hello Everyone,
I recently attempted to install the BIND service on my Slackware 8.1
machine (kernel version 2.4.18), however I ran into a few problems.
At first, I downloaded the newest version of the BIND (9.2.3) software
package at isc.org. I read one of the readme files that explained BIND 9.2.3
had been successfully installed on Redhat and "heard reports" that it
installed successfully on Slackware 8.0 as well. I assumed that if it worked
on new versions of Redhat it should work just fine in Slackware. I read
install documentation/guides both in the /src directory and online.
So I did the basic ./configure | make | make install process and then
edited the named.conf and database files. After that, I attempted to run
named (just by typing named at the command prompt) and it returned no
errors --- just returned to the command prompt. When I issued a "ps -aux"
command, though, named was not listed there. It confused me for a while
until I finally checked /usr/local for the /named directory and it wasn't
there! Make Install DID copy the named executable to /usr/sbin, along with
some other tools (rncd, dnssec-signkey, in /usr/local/sbin), but it doesn't
look like any new libraries or header files were installed (no named
directory anywhere). I issued a "find -name *named*" and found only those
few files I just mentioned. I tried completely removing the source directory
and downloading again... running ./configure --prefix=/usr/local | make |
make install ... but same thing... no /named directory. I noticed that when
I ran "make install" the process went by quite quick.. entering and leaving
directories (but probably not copying anything).
I then thought maybe it had something to do with it being a new (maybe
beta like?) version - so I downloaded BIND 8.4.2 and ran the "make all" ->
"make install". Same thing when I run named... No errors.. but no 'named'
process listed when I type "ps -aux". This time when I checked under the
default prefix /usr/local there WAS a /bind directory with /include and /lib
.. but there was only a few files in each directory!?
I also just recently attempted to install Sendmail (I didn't get too
far) but I noticed the same thing happening. When I ran the shell script to
install the files for Sendmail it barely installed anything. It seemed like
I was missing the libraries and header files that came with Sendmail (I'm
not positive though). I noticed that in order to install either Sendmail or
qmail (my choice now) I needed to have DNS running, so that's why I'm trying
to install BIND.
My only clue is that maybe there's something wrong with the makefile?? I
really don't know... I checked my hard drive space and deleted everything
that I could (now there's over 300 megs free) and tried installing again...
Nothing seems to work - any ideas?
