yet another internet connection problem

    Hi all,
    I have read in this ng of problem related to internet connection, but
    none of them helped me since now. So I ask you just an advice on how
    to resolve this (maybe) stupid problem.

    Here some info:

    * Linux Distro: Mandrake 9.2
    * Modem: US Robotics (External Modem - it is not a win modem - it is
    connected to COM2 that is ttyS1)

    * /dev/modem point correctly to ttyS1

    * Mandrake COntrol Center is not able to detectd the mnodem
    HardDrake is not able to detect the modem

    * kppp until yesterday told me that modem does not respond but now is
    simply unable to give me any info since just tell me that is searching
    for a modem (and it keep continue since hours!!!)

    * minicom gives me OK when I send the command AT but no led of my
    modem is flashing even for a nanosecond (only power led is costantly
    visible)

    Really I do not know what else I can do, please just an advice would
    be very precious to me. Thanks a lot
