It isn't _that_ antique, just well-aged.

Any distribution should do the trick well enough, but I would
recommend avoiding the large desktop environments such as GNOME and KDE.

I suggest going for (assuming you want the GUI), something like xfce if
you want a small but capable desktop environment. Myself, I prefer
fluxbox. There are many to choose from, its a matter of trying them for
yourself.

For a graphical login, instead of the very limited xdm (you can't
shutdown the computer using it), I would suggest wdm (Wings Display
Manager). That way, you avoid installing via dependency a lot of the
GNOME and KDE libraries.

All of these packages can easily be found in Debian. wdm may be harder
to find in other distributions, but the other programs would be easily
found on all major distributions.
