Card reader doesn't work in newer distros...

If my USB card reader (Biostar eCatcher 6-in-1) is plugged in while
booting Suse Live Eval 9.0 hotplug will stop until it is unplugged,
Mandrake 9.2 stops at detecting devices, and Knoppix 3.3 also stops
while detecting. It works in Mandrake 9.1 though.

If I plug it in under Suse after booting, it detects it and gives it the
id of 2, but doesn't seem to cause anything that's mountable. One time
it came up in Yast2 as "" but I couldn't set it as a mount point in
fdisk, as fdisk didn't see it.

I've tried restarting hotplug after booting with it plugged in, but it
looks like hotplug actually deinitializes the USB storage services
(according to dmesg). If I unplug and replug the device in, the OS hangs
and I have to hard reset.

In Mandrake 9.2 if I plug it in after booting, it sometimes comes up in
usbview, but if I try to run harddrake or Mandrake Control Center it
doesn't load until I I remove the reader.

Plugging it in after booting in Knoppix, it gets ignored entirely

What I did to get it working under Mandrake 9.1:
add the line 'options scsi_mod max_scsi_luns=32' in /etc/modules.conf
(no quotes of course)

This doesn't work in Mandrake 9.2
Passing max_scsi_luns=6 this as a boot parameter in Knoppix (as
recommended on a forum for card readers)
No idea how to set max_scsi_luns in Suse, and it seems each dist is
different for this setting.

Any ideas?
