apt-get does not work on Suse

Hi all,
I am running Suse 9.0 on a P4 256 MB System. I have installed apt and
synaptic from http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/home.html . Now whenever
i try to install a package via apt-get, it exits with a segmentation
fault.
phoenix:~# apt-get install java2-jre
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Segmentation fault

When i had debian, apt-get used to work like a charm. I have searched
google for it but to no avail.
I also tried rebuilding rpm database but that doesnot help.
My /etc/apt/apt.conf can be viewed at
www.cse.iitd.ernet.in/~csu01119/apt.conf if it helps.

Any ideas??
