Morning,

Due to my lack of experience of raid, hopefully someone can offer some
advice :)

Had a nasty shock this morning as daily log showed

> Mar 26 00:54:37 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:42 (hdd), sector 1835040
> Mar 26 00:54:37 raid1: Disk failure on hdd2, disabling device.
> Mar 26 00:54:37 raid1: hdd2: rescheduling block 1835040
> Mar 26 00:54:37 md0: no spare disk to reconstruct array! -- continuing in
degraded mode
> Mar 26 00:54:37 md1: no spare disk to reconstruct array! -- continuing in
degraded mode
> Mar 26 00:54:37 md: (skipping faulty hdd2 )
> Mar 26 00:54:37 raid1: hdc2: redirecting sector 1835040 to another mirror

A couple of checks showed the following.

> [root@server /]# more /proc/mdstat
> Personalities : [raid1]
> read_ahead 1024 sectors
> md0 : active raid1 hdc2[0] hdd2[1](F)
> 1052160 blocks [2/1] [U_]
>
> md1 : active raid1 hdc1[0] hdd1[1](F)
> 38909312 blocks [2/1] [U_]
>
> unused devices: <none>
> [root@server /]# /sbin/fdisk /dev/hdd
>
> Unable to read /dev/hdd

Scary!

Anyways, machine is remotely located. I can get there tonight but obviously
would like some redundancy back before then if I can.
Haven't tried a raidhotadd yet, wanted some advice before possibly hosing
data. Critical data is safe on another backup but I don't really want to
lose the stuff thats on there.

Is it best to play it safe and leave it limping on one disk till later, or
are there any "safe" things I can try. Haven't rebooted the server yet as I
can't afford the downtime if it doesn't come back :P

I am guessing I have a fried HD since fdisk can't see it.

TIA

CJ
