I am pretty much a Linux novice, and I have been playing around with a
"free" copy Lindows 4.5 that came with a magazine. And the first
serious difficulty that I have run into is that it doesn't seem to
have any compiler included. When I try to install anything, I get
error messages like "no acceptable C compiler in $PATH". Also, the
file /usr/bin/cc does not seem to exist, so I can't even install Gcc.
1.) Is there *really* no compiler in this distribution, or am I
just doing something dumb ??
2.) Is there some (not too difficult) way around this problem? Where
can I find a pre-compiled compiler??? NOTE: The computer that I have
Lindows installed on is not currently connected to the Internet, so I
can't sign up for their "click&run" service even if I wanted to --
and in any case, I sure don't want to get roped into paying $99 per
year for free software.
3.) If I do succeed in solving this problem will I then have a
useable Linux OS, or am I just going to encounter one weird limitation
after another ? For example: Many of the most fundamental Unix
commands seem to be missing from the command line shell – even things
as basic as "man" or "apropos"!
I am looking for a Linux OS with a very easy-to-use GUI that my wife &
kids could use for email, net-surfing, writing homework, etc., etc.;
but I also wanted to be able to play around with the command line
interface myself and occasionally add some software or teach the kids
a little bit about programming and file structures, etc. From the
descriptions, it looked as if Lindows was going to satisfy both of
those requirements, but if it's really just a rip-off, then I'm going
to stop wasting time on it and go back to RedHat.
Thanx in Advance, john w.
