I am a newbie and using a linux box. After I upgrade my XFree86 system to
ver 4.4.0, a session menu appears and let me choose either default boot
mode or fail safe boot mode. In either case, I can get the default window
manager changed from Gnome to X with only xterm and a xsm(fail safe) windows
appears.

What is the cause and how can I restore the gnome startup environment.

Config:
1) OS : RedHat 9.0
2) installed XFree86 : 4.4.0
