newbie argh! cvs and pam...

I have setup a CVS-repository and read all I could find about cvs and
pam, but nevertheless I keep getting the following

peter@debian:~/temp$ cvs -d pserver:peter@localhost:/home/peter/cvs login

Logging in to :pserver:peter@localhost:2401/home/peter/cvs
CVS password:
PAM start error: Critical error - immediate abort
Fatal error, aborting.
cvs [login aborted]: unrecognized auth response from localhost: pam
failed to release authenticator

Where do I go from here? All help is welcome.
