i can remember where every different computer had its own proprietary
operating system. The result? Chaos. Files on one computer wre
incompatible with another - floppies were formatted one way on onse system
and another way on another system.

It must have been terrible and I am so glad that there is one common
oprating system which (IMHO) has been effected not by industry standards but
in the way consumers chose to spend their money within the choices available
    to them at the time

If the winner of world popularity is X or Y is of no real consequence to me.
However, what is important IMHO is that computers are able to work with
consumer interests in mind as opposed to proprietary interests.

I mean, I can attach a file to an email - send it almost anywhere in the
world. If the recipient has a similar program - great they can oipen it.
    If not = stuck!

Until, of course, file viewers became important and ultimately XML(?)

ps - ne pre-judgements made. It seems to be the choice consumers make when
parting with their hard earned dosh
