Personally, I would probably not mess with XP. They aren't too
different under the hood. In fact if you go to Help->About in windows
explorer, 2k comes back as 'windows 5.0' and XP comes back as 'windows
5.1'
I don't personally feel that XP is worth the upgrade if you have 2k.

I like mandrake a lot. Its pretty, and the mandrake control center
does a top notch job of letting you set everything up.

THese are the types of file systems. NTFS is the newer kind, but MS
keeps changing things in it and support for it in linux is buggy at
best. FAT32 is older and has more problems with fragmentiation, but
works very well with linux.
I would set things up like this. One partition for linux, using ext3
or whatever the default for your distro is. One NTFS partition
containing windows and your core programs. A third FAT32 partition
where you keep data. This way you have the more reliable windows file
system for your 2k/xp install, but still have full access to your data
in linux.

Here's the deal. When your computer boots up, it goes to a special
section of your hard drive to decide how to boot up. This is the
master boot record, or MBR.
With linux, the MBR loads up a bootloader, generally programs called
LILO or GRUB. Either of these nowadays are pretty smart, and if other
operating systems are already there they create menu entries for them.
So you can select to boot into Windows, Linux, or whatever other OS
you prefer.
Now, MS has a different philosophy. That is anything but a MS
operating system is irrelevent. When Windows is installed, the same
menu is created but any non-MS operating systems are not put on the
menu.
So if you install Linux then windows, you'll lose your little menu and
be unable to boot into linux at all.
