Sound card won't work...why?

I just installed Suse Linux 9.1 on a new computer with a soundcard on the
motherboard. Suse identifies it thus:
Asustek A7V600 motherboard (ADI AD1980 codec [SoundMAX])
It seemed to set up the card correctly, but now I get no sound. When I went
to Yast to try to reconfigure it, I got this message:
The kernel module snd-via82xx for sound support could not be loaded. This
can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ
parameters.
Also, I got this:
An error has occurred. Check you have correctly installed the ALSA package
"from the series 'snd')
If the problem persists try passing options to the ALSA module. If your
sound card still will not work, try OSS/Free or another module.
Well, as you can imagine, I find all this less than helpful. Why can't the
kernel module be loaded? How do I find out if I have it? If not where do
I it? And how do I load it?
Anybody got an idea what this is all about and what I can do about it?
