Adding yourself to the "wheel" group may help solve your problem.
Then, from the CLI, type "visudo" and add the wheel group (with or
without password, as you like) and you will be able to do many
more things as a user. Remember, that when you are in the CLI, you
can't umount a directory that you are actually in. IOW, if you are
in /mnt/cdrom, you can't umount /cdrom. You have to at least fall
back to /mnt or your /home directory.

Check /etc/fstab and see if your cdrom is "supermount". If so,
changing it to "auto" will cause the cdrom to unmount whenever it
is empty.
