Do you mean you have typed "less /var/log/syslog" in the console and
you got the error "No such file or directory" ?...
If so, please try the following:

    dmesg > out.txt
    ps ax >> out.txt
    ifconfig >> out.txt
    mount >> out.txt
    less /etc/fstab >> out.txt

And post the file out.txt here. If everything freezes so badly, the
most likely problems are bad hardware (as I said), or inter-process
communication problems, for example no "/tmp" directory, loopback
network interface down or something similar. I imagine a corrupted
filesystem could also have this effect. If you use NFS, a malfunctioning
NFS server can freeze up your station.
The file mounting problems you mentioned should be the starting point
for your search. If the graphical system doesn't allow you to check
    what's wrong, switch to a text-mode console - press Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or
F2..F6) and run the commands from there. To switch back to X-windows,
press Ctrl-Alt-F7. It surprises me that you know how to configure NAT
and DNS, but you don't know how to run a proper diagnostic.
