Ubuntu - saving configs and recalling them @ startup

Looks like Ubuntu's config file scheme is much different than in
Knoppix. When you save your configs in Gnome, Ubuntu doesn't give you
save options (location, what to save, etc.) nor does it tell you how to
recall your saved config when you start up next time. Is this feature
exclusive to Knoppix or something? Does Kubuntu behave the same way as
Ubuntu does when it comes to configs?
