On the 15th of each month, there is a posting to the news groups
news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, and news.lists.misc with the
title "List of Big Eight Newsgroups"

Neither of these groups is listed - comp.os.linux has never been a
sanctioned group, and comp.os.linux.help was renamed comp.os.linux.misc
back in December 1994. They exist only on news servers who like to claim
they have more groups than anyone else.
There are also a bunch of 'alt.os.linux.*' groups, such as
alt.os.linux.gentoo, alt.os.linux.mandrake, alt.os.linux.redhat and so on,
as well as 'alt.os.linux' and 'alt.linux'. The alt.os.linux hierarchy seems
to be relatively active, but a little quirky. LURK AT LEAST A WEEK before
posting.
Another solution is to tell your news reader to get a list of all available
newsgroups from the news server. See the man page for your reader. Still
another solution is to look at http://groups.google.com and see if you can
find an interesting (and active) group there.
