Suse 10 will not boot after kernel upgrade

Using Suse 10 (novel distribution - fresh install) I installed my packages
and the core system, booted, and then upgrade all the oustanding packages
using YAST. I booted again, and then proceeded with a YAST mediated kernel
update - when I booted again the system hung being unable to find the mounts
correctly.
I did not lilo since grub is my boot loader and the instructions say "if you
use grub there is nothing else you need to do"
well not exactly....
Any suggestions out there before I just reinstall and never try to upgrade
my kernel again...
amk
