It also depends on what physical terminal or terminal emulator you are using.
Your terminal emulator may provide key translation.

I am using PuTTY on Windows XP Pro. And i'v checked the keyboard mapping, and backspace key mapping. PuTTY offers "Control-H" or "Control-? (127)" as backspace key mappings, neither of these work any differently.
