VMWARE has nothing to do with the actual (display) hardware. This has some
nice properties, after upgrading my Linux box I simply copied the old
VMWARE virtual machines from the old machine and they all ran without
even noticing they moved hardware or version of hosting OS.

To get higher resolution (as well as better disk and network
performance), install the `wmware tools' in the guest OS. This is a set
of drivers with optimal communication to the virtual machine. You're
better of in a VMWARE forum for these issues.
