Indeed. I used to run X on a 68040 (remember those?) machine, and most
things were fine. XEmacs was a bit slow from time to time.
I recommend fvwm2 as a window manager. I use it on everything, and on
our desktop machines, it means my session is ready within 3
seconds of login, whereas my KDE using colleagues have an apparently
interminable wait ;-)
