I know there is a gentoo newsgroup for this, but I cannot seem to get
the right answer to fix my problems, so I thought I would post here and
see what happens.
I recently installed gentoo and while it is interesting, I am having
problems installing several programs. It installs firefox 1.07 with its
emerge program, but it will not even see firefox 1.5 and forget about
installing it. I downloaded it seperately in an ebuild, but even that it
would not install. I was thinking about using package manager to install
it, but I am not sure if that would break portage if I installed a
normal .gz or gz2 file instead of gentoos ebuild.
Have you done an "emerge --sync" in the last few days?
Firefox 1.5 is now available for x86 architectures.
If you want the newest version before gentoo considers it stable enough for
your architecture then add "www-client/mozilla-firefox ~x86" to
your /etc/portage/package.keywords file (that's if you are running x86
architecture).
I have the same problem trying install a program called dvd+rw-tools.
Emerge just can't seem to find it even though I can find in a gz or gz2
format.
It is probably something to do with the "+" sign in the ebuild name. It
can't be found with "emerge -s dvd+rw-tools".
It is in app-cdr/dvd+rw-tools.
Using "emerge dvd+rw-tools" it installed fine for me.
