we have recently upgraded our system (network proxy server) from
Fedora 3 to Fedora 5.
At the beginning everything seems to work smoothly. But, soon we found
a critical
change that breaks our program: The write(sktFd, buf, len) function
returned -1 in Core 3, but
0 in Core 5 if the parameter len is -1. This change looks like to me
that someone has
simply changed to traffic light color "yellow" to "blue".
We could quickly fix this problem in our code. But,
if any third party programs has this kind of problem we will be out of
luck.
So, I would be cautious with the upgrade, especially if you have many
not-so-carefully developed ( or over smart ) programs.

Thanks for the heads up, James. You did just what I want to do and it was
help like this that I was really looking for. I have spent years getting
my linux box setup, just the way I want it and would just love to simply
do an upgrade from FC3 to FC5. But, after reading the release notes,
there are some pretty big version changes in here as well as "We just
don't do it that way anymore" stuff so I don't really think that an
upgrade would be fruitful or even a wise thing to do. There is nothing
like a fresh install on a clean disk, no doubt, and I think I will wait a
bit, get another 200Gb or better drive (Found them on newegg for less
than $100.), and install Fedora Core 5 to the new disk to get the distro
properly installed. Then I can mount my old drive in the system and
little by little, put it all back.
They did some pretty major stuff with the file system I think it said in
the release notes, something about getting rid of /etc/fstab? That would
be pretty major alright. Everything is different now with new versions
like apache and mysql and I use both of those. I had better see if there
is any way to backup the mysql database for the family photo gallery in
coppermine as to lose all that and have to put back thousands of photos
and descriptions would suck big time.
I hope that I don't have to use selinux, that thing broke everything I
had and when I shut it off, all was copacetic. Thanks again for the heads
up James. Goodnight.
