Hello,
I'm looking to improve my skills with linux so that I will be better
prepared for a job interview in the near future. What I'm looking for are
some common linux problems that I can learn from. Maybe a few questions
about how to fix something that is often seen going wrong or some tricky
problems that I can try and solve and in the proccess learn from.
Thanks in advanced for any and all help.

That's very easy... log in as root and delete /etc... You'll learn more
about linux than you ever imagined...
However, on a serious note... why not visit one of the "self hosting"
distributions like Gentoo? You'll be involved with the install process most
intimately... If that doesn't give you enough "hands-on education"... then
track down the LFS... you'll love it.
