I'm looking for suggestions on how to gain remote access to my linux
desktop pc while on vacation. It is a Ubuntu 10.4 system connected to
the internet through a router and cable modem.
Since you mentioned elsewhere in this thread that you'll be using your
laptop to access your home machine I would recommend the following
- Sign up with one of the dynamic DNS providers. I use dyndns.org, but
there are several others.
- Install ddclient on your home machine, and configure it for the
provider from the previous step.
- Configure your router to forward ssh connections to your home
machine.
- Install Xming[1] and PuTTY on your laptop. Configure it to connect to
whatever hostname you set up with the dynamic DNS service.
You can get Xming from http://www.straightrunning.com/XmingNotes. Bear
in mind that running X over the internet won't be a pleasurable
experience, so rather than try to get a full desktop session going, just
launch whatever you need from an ssh session. It'll ease the pain
slightly.
Cheers,
Tom
