Depmod hangs during first boot-up

I've got a copy of the Red Hat Linux 9 Bible, and I'm trying to install
it on my system. Everything works fine until the install finishes, and
the system reboots. I see various things happening, all marked with a
confidence inspiring green [OK] in the right margin, and then it says
"Finding module dependencies" and hangs. I see no disk activity, and
there is no response to keyboard entries.

I've searched the mailing list on Redhat.com for that key phrase. No
hits. I've searched this list, and found the advice to comment out some
lines in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, which apparently would end up not
calling depmod during boot-up.

I've got a couple of questions. First, is that advice on the level?
Wouldn't depmod just hang again when I call it after the system finishes
booting?

Second, why is depmod called on a fresh install? Or is this the normal
procedure for boot-up, and not done selectively only for boots after the
first? I don't actually know what depmod does (besides hang my system) -
it isn't in the index in the "Bible."

Third, how would one go about editing that file, if Linux won't boot?

As you all can see, I'm a rank Linux newbie. All advice is welcome,
though I'd most appreciate some that'll help me get this thing running. :-)
