How old is the laptop?

Rather than redhat version 6 you would probably be better off with Vector
Linux. Redhat 6.x is pretty old now and I'd probably suggest you'll be
happier with Vector. I use Red hat and Debian on pentium 300+ maachines and
Vector on P200 down to 486's and then LTSP on my old 486 Notebook
