Re: Depmod hangs during first boot-up

I've now tried the following:

Since depmod seemed to hang on the directory mwave, I verified that
mwave contained mwave.o. It was there.
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 42175 Mar 13 2003 mwave.o

So that wasn't it. I next tried removing the directory. That got depmod
to hang even earlier, for some reason.

So it was a possibility that the installation had somehow failed. I
don't know how that would be possible, but I reinstalled the entire
mess. When that was finished, and the system restarted, it hung again.
This time it hung just before printing "Finding module dependencies." I
notice that the script seems to call depmod with different options
before printing that note and running depmod -A, so I'm guessing that it
hung there. I restarted, and this time it hung in the same place as
before.

I tried another fresh installation. This time I tried the ext3 format,
but that made no difference. On restart depmod hung again, in the same
place as before.

I should add that the install media have been checked out clean, and I
used the "find bad blocks" option when I formatted the partition.

Help?
