Red Hat 9 is fine... after install.
But install is just not that great!
Suggest that:
1) Create swap /boot and / partition using a bootable knoppix Cd
(Dowlodable).
The utilitie to do this are either cfdisk (easier in my view), fdisk,
and also sfdisk (that I have never used).
2) If you have a fairly new video card (Nvidia FX 5200 based for
example), that you go to single user mode (/etc/inittab).
Then install the Driver downloaded from the NVIDIA web site.
This works well.
When it has been installed (you will find more work!), the RH9 is
quite good and rock stable.
