OK, that didn't work. I also tried using a minimal installation of RH9.

The curious thing about that is that it seems to stall out in a
different place when I put in sound=0. Instead of getting to depmod,
and printing the message "Finding module dependencies," I now only get
to "Enabling swap space."

Are the console messages asynchronous from the stuff that they are
announcing? Is it possible that it's the swap partition that's
causing me grief, and not the module dependencies, and that depmod
only hangs because something else is hanging the entire kernel?

Is there some way I can verify that?
