I do not see the reason why linux can't go on HP. Regarding dual boor,
go and find Linux+Windows NT HOWTO. In short (micro HOWTO :-) ): install
WinXP (you've already got it) then install linux (boot sector not in
MBR!!! but on the first sector of /boot partition) then run WindowsXP,
and grab the first sector of /boot partiton (use BootPart for example -
very good and small tool) and save it to file. Prepare new entry in
boot.ini file (from boot partition of WinXP). Put the entry at the end
of the file (for example like this below):

c:\rh9.bin="Red Hat 9.0"

where c: is the boot disk for windows and rh9.bin is the file with the
first sector of the linux /boot partition.

Thats all, after restart you can select between booting WinXP or linux.
