New Linux User Question

I installed RH 7.1 (to be compatable with Borland Kylix 2) and I have two
problems:

1. Ethernet fails on Boot, configured for DHCP using Cable Modem.
2. After login prompt, 3 sends later the screen goes black, then no response
from PC.

Any ideas? Can I boot into some mode to do diagnostics?
