new install 9 worked ok, on reboot reinitialized everything

Installed RH9 on AMD2400. Install went very well (easier than I thought:
  I had been shying away from installing because I was afraid of Red
Hat!). Installed updates as offered upon install.

Worked beautifully for a couple of reboots. No problem. Set up mail,
etc. Received some mail, saved some documents.

This morning upon booting from cold, it asked to install username again,
reinitialize Evolution mail, etc. Lost all mail that was in my file.
Lost all documents.

What happened?
