I ran into the same problem and posted a similar message earlier. I
ended up downloading RH 7.3 ans installed it with no problem. I don't
know if 8 will work but I think my machine was right on the edge of an
acceptable configuration for RH 9. K6, 266MHz, 192MB (corrected my
prior guess) RAM.
After upgrading the samba to 2.2.7 ( I think) it's running pretty well
as a file and printer server. Runnig apps in KDE or GNOME is a tad
slow but doable.
