OK I have installed a minimal (no x) install of RH9.0 on the 1GB disk,
by removing the second 6GB hard disk (hdc). This installation still
boots when hdc is plugged back in as long as kernel option
hdc=noprobe is added from GRUB
consequently hdc is not recognised.

Also I can use my old Mandrake boot floppy with the following options at
LILO prompt
linux raid=noautodetect root=/dev/hda2
to boot using the old kerel but most of the RH config and recognise both
disk drives,

Or I can boot the Mandrake floppy defaults to use the old installation
on hdc.

Any one got any ideas how to fix RH9 / GRUB config to run properly and
recognise the hdc?
