Sorry for forgetting the first part of the thread. I don't
remember whether you are just trying to install or whether
you finished installation and are now trying to boot the
installed system.
If the latter, installation finished and trying to boot the
installed system, use the installation CD and boot into
rescue mode. Mount your normal root partition on
/mnt/sysimage or something else useful. Edit /etc/inittab
to change the '5' to '3' on the initdefault line. Unmount
the normal root partition. Then, when you boot the normal
system, you should get a text console, from which you can
debug X.
Once booted into runlevel 3, if X hoses up,
ALT-CTRL-Backspace will kill the X server and return you to
a text console. Or, you can do ALT-CTRL-F{1,2,3,4,5,6} to
get a text console while X continues to run.
If the X server is taking down the kernel with it, one thing
to try is to comment out the 'Load "dri"' line in the
modules section.
