Right: I am NOT trying to run X. I guess that's unusual nowadays. I
ran 0.99r13 Slackware on that monitor ten years plus one month ago, but
obviously I am not a guru. So do I still look for a problem related to
the frame buffer? I guess not.

I am not averse to running X on that monitor, but I think I remember
trying the monochrome server back in the day and that it did not work
very well. I sort of assumed that there haven't been improvements to
the monochrome part of the server.

I can say that the RH installer has never handled my MGA card and mono
monitor well, to the extent that I can't tell where the cursor is.
