    Play with the AT M commands in your modem init string.

    Speaker Muting control
    ----------------------
    M0 Speaker is always off.
    M1 On while dialling, off after connected.
    M2 On all the time.
    M3 Off during dialing, on until connected, off afterwards.

    M1 is the usual default. It's advisable not to use M0 (or just M by
    itself, which means exactly the same thing) until you're absolutely
    certain that you've configured the right phone number into a system.
    It's also advisable to change to using M1 if you ever start having
    problems connecting.
