What files/scripts determine window manager in FC 1

I have yet another maddening problem with FC 1. I upgraded my Dell
Optiplex (GX 240) to Fedora Core 1 from Red Hat 9.0. My RH 9 ran GNOME as
its default Window Manager. After the upgrade (over RH 9), FC 1 insists
on running KDE as the default Window Manager. So far, I've tried the GUI
desktop switching tool, the command line "switchdesk" and have tried to
locate any possible file where the kernel is being told to run KDE. I've
edited .Xclients, .Xclients-default but nothing I do causes the desktop
window manager to permanent change from KDE to GNOME.

What files/scripts run at boot time that feed the window manager
information to the kernel and determine which window manager runs?

I continue to be befuddled by the number of problems I've had doing what
has formerly been a seamless series of upgrades (starting with RH 6.2).
I've done the upgrade or complete new installation of FC 1 on 4 machines.
Only one has gone smoothly. Two machines remain problematic for entirely
different reasons.

Thanks for any help you can give here.
