The way I do it is:

Using Partition Magic v7 or later create:
Part 1 (Partition 1) with 5-7 mb unformatted or formatted for Dos.
Part 2 for Windows NT/2k/XP unformatted.
Part 3 for Linux swap formatted.
Part 4 for Linux ext2 or 3 as needed.
Then set part 2 active.
Install Windows to part 2 after final reboot loadup all the fix paks &
patches.
Using PM set part 4 active (not really needed but for safety).
Install Linux to part 4 BUT install Lilo / Grub to part 1 or/and MBR of
actual drive having made sure that the Windows partition is seen and setup by
Lilo/Grub.

If install more O/S's than the above you will have to lay out slightly
different but utilising logical partitions after the first two, I.e.,
Part 1 as above
Part 2 as above
Part 3 as a Logical partition containing:
 L1 Linux/BSD etc swap.
 L2 Linux partition
 L3 BSD partition
 L4 Free partition.

If you want to install Dos, install in first partition as it does have a
limitations one of which is to be within the first 1024 cylinders and who
knows exactly where that is regardless of drive specs but install Lilo to MBR
(Master Boot Record = 1st block/sector) of drive.

Note that the last installed Linux type O/S will overwrite the previous Linux
type installs of Lilo to the MBR so you will need to use the same boot
process ie Lilo or Grub (I use Lilo to keep it simple to administer using
vi). Make sure that all the Linux type partition contain details of ALL the
installed O/S's.

Install one O/S at a time and recheck that the boot system is working for
each installed O/S. If not use PM to make the problem one active reboot and
fix the problem before resetting the active partition.

The need to set the partition you are about to install to is just a safe
guard. When using PM load via floppies. PM includes a procedure to create
floppy rescue disks and you will need two formatted floppies.
