Memtest86 reported errors on this system. I was able to boot with the
kernel option mem=128m, which makes sense as the errors found my memtest
were higher than this.
[Is there something that makes higher memory more likely to fail? Something
very similar occurred Back When on my laptop.]
I replaced the memory, and the machine is now booting well even with all
memory (and memtest is reporting a clean scan).
So..."nevermind".
