compiling a new kernel

I thought this was going to be easy - but then again it never is....

I have compiled a new kernel from version 2.4.20-31.9 sources. The
trouble is the default configuation is all wrong (not like the kernel
already compiled) no several things are broken that I cannot fix.

I keep getting an error on boot that "input.o" cannot be found but no
errors show up in the logs to find out where this is coming from.

I get the following on boot in /var/log/messages
insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.20-31.9/kernel/drivers/parport/parport.o:
insmod char-major-6 failed
I don't know why because I have the paralell port compiled in the kernel

I get the following when wine starts
wine: /etc/rc5.d/S98wine: line 16: /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc/register: No
such file or directory
This stops wine from working properly but I don't know what kerrnel
parameter to change to fix it. I have MISC binaries compiled in.

The X server starts but I get this in the logs
>gconfd (mhart-1438): Resolved address
"xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only config
source at position 0
Which i think has something to do with GNome but don't know how to fix it.

The CD ROM driver does not appear to load
insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.20-31.9/kernel/drivers/cdrom/cdrom.o: insmod
ide-cd failed

I have been messing around with this all day and still only have it half
working.

does anyone have a "default" .config file for the kernel for RedHat 9
kernel 2.4.20-31.9 so I can start again?

Why did I think it would be straight foward? It never is.....

Michael
