You do.... look in /boot and you will find a file like config-2.4.20-31.9
just copy that to the proper location and rename it.

Hint: 'make mrproper' followed by 'make oldconfig' will cleanup the failed
attempt(s) and generate a workable base .config file based on your current
(working) kernel with the extra features not needed turned off.
