What "politely" asked you? Does that use consolehelper (a programme
which others can use and which, if they give the right password,
runs programmes which the user, him/herself cannot run)?
Are the programmes you are interested in registered with consolehelper?
Is that set up right for the users?
If it uses consolehelper, try
man consolehelper
