What "politely" asked you? Does that use consolehelper (a programme
which others can use and which, if they give the right password,
runs programmes which the user, him/herself cannot run)?

Are the programmes you are interested in registered with consolehelper?
Is that set up right for the users?

If it uses consolehelper, try

 man consolehelper
