    DOS had marked sectors as bad on this disk previously. someone else
    suggested that linux would in fact not use the bad sectors and that the
    error could be ignored. i would like a way to test this - similar to the
    older versions of dos and windows defrag that would show a graphic of the
    sectors and which ones had been marked bad. i'm going to have a look for a
    utility for linux that will do this. thanks for the help
