Wrong group but please help anyway

Hi, I'm a complete beginner to Linux and am in processs of instaliing
Mandrake 10. All I want to do is for the moment anyway is use it as as
FTP sever. I'm a bit confused by the option tab Firewall / Router /
Internet Gateway. I will be connecting my Dlink Firewall router to the
PC containing Mandrake and I always thought that the router itself was
the gateway.
