FC2 - controlling PPP link?

I installed FC 2 on a spare partition and used the various tools to set
up my PPP dialup connection. In the past I have been able to add
modemlights to the panel and control the PPP link from there. Now I
can add modemlights to the panel but it doesn't start up the PPP link.
I have to go the screen that shows the Ethernet and PPP connections and
activate PPP from there; and the same to take PPP back down. And
modemlights never lights up.
