Getting USB scanner to work in FC2

In Red Hat 9 my USB scanner (Mustek 1200UB) just works when I give
the scanimage command (with some arguments). In FC2 I have to give
a -d argument to specify the scanner, and then it doesn't work unless
I am superuser. Anybody know how to fix this, or is that the way it
spozed to be?
