Modem installation problems

I have set up several systems on Linux 7.3 (I know, this is pretty old
version) and on one of them it takes a long time to log in when I dial up
for support. This is particularly bothersome when I try to use uucp since
it doesn't want to wait for the password prompt and disconnects. Ideally I
would like to find out why that one system has such a long delay the first
time you log in on a job but I need to be able to get uucp to wait for the
password prompt. I have tried adding '\r' codes and multiple '--gin' and
even tried playing with the 'nuucp word' but I still have a lot of trouble
getting a file sent over. Sometimes it works but usually it has to try
several times before it makes a good connection. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
